Rincon de la Vieja Volcano

Costa Rica has six active volcanoes. One of these, found in the Northwestern corner of the country, is the Rincon de la Vieja (the niche where the Old One lives) Volcano, which is located within Rincon de la Vieja National Park. The dry and cloud forest prevails in the area. The park is well organized having a very interesting trail system taking you thru smoking fumaroles and hot mud pools. You can walk right through the volcanic activity. Hot mineral springs and mud therapy are common in all the area. The forest itself is a great place to bird watch and observe mammals like the ant eater, raccoons, deer and more.

Poás Volcano

The volcano experiences eruptions similar to those of a geyser, which consist of columns of muddy water together with steam that rise from a few to several kilometers. These eruptions have made Poas famous as the biggest geyser in the world. The main crater is enormous, almost 2 km in diameter and 300 m deep. At the bottom of this crater there is a thermo mineral lagoon some 350 m across. Just getting to Poás Volcano you’ll traverse a beautiful path of coffee plantations and flower farms that adorn the side of the road and the views as you start climbing are breathtaking around the volcano.

Irazú Volcano

Irazú, at 3,432 m high, it is the highest volcano in the country, and has a long history of eruptions and eruption cycles. Irazú is another option for viewing an impressive live volcano in Costa Rica. You can see both the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean on a clear day from this volcano. There are three main craters here. The main one is almost circular, 1,050 m in diameter and 250 to 300 m deep. At its base there is a lagoon with greenish color water. Another crater is called Diego de la Haya which is circular, 690 m in diameter and 80 m deep. The landscape that surrounds the volcano is like a science-fiction movie set the past eruptions and the acid rain combined with powerful winds have caused the land around the craters to look hostile and gray.

Turrialba Volcano

is the latest in the Central Volcanic Mountain Range in the north-east, 25 km from Cartago, and took the same basis as that Irazú can say that these two volcanoes are almost identical twins, "is composed of 3 craters , each with small vents, called as main crater, central and east. In the foothills of Turrialba Volcano is the National Monument of Guayabo, which is the most significant archaeological discovery of the country: pre-Columbian ruins located in the middle of a rainforest.
