Villa Caletas - Central Pacific

About:

Villa Caletas is a luxury boutique hotel inspired by tropical colonial architecture, with a touch of neoclassical influence. Reflecting the eccentric, colorful style of French owner and interior designer, Dennis Roy, the property is chockablock with artifacts, from European art and oriental rugs to terracotta masks and a host of Latin American earthenware.

Located on a rainforest hilltop in the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, it is prized not only for its location near Jaco beach, but also for its outstanding facilities and first-class service. Views of lush tropical rainforests complement some of the most breathtaking sunsets you will ever see, while pairs of Scarlet Macaws fly overhead.

At the bottom of the mountain, Villa Caletas is fortunate to have its own private beach. Guests are welcome to soak up the sun, either in the secluded volcanic-sand cove or up the mountain, at one of the hotel’s magnificent infinity pools.

The stand-alone Zephyr Palace is located within the grounds of the hotel.  Surrounded by rainforest and nestled on top of a hill, this spectacular mansion affords panoramic views of the Gulf of Nicoya.

Location:

Villa Caletas is located in the Central Pacific Region of Costa Rica, just 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from Juan Santamaria International Airport and the capital, San Jose. This is one of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations due to its easy accessibility, beautiful natural surroundings and the wide variety of activities nearby. Everything is at arm’s reach, from national parks, outdoor adventures and river tours to deep-sea fishing and snorkeling.

Jaco beach is a surfer's paradise with no shortage of attractions for travelers, while Jaco town is bursting with nightlife, international dining options, and even casinos. The adjacent Playa Hermosa attracts the more experienced and adventurous surfers during the day.

The hotel overlooks the Nicoya Gulf and the southern tip of the Nicoya Penninsula, a remote part of the country hiding beautiful beaches that are best accessed via ferry or boat.

The 12,000 acres of mostly primary forest in nearby Carara National Park form a transition zone between the tropical dry forest prevalent in the north of the country and the wetter climates to the south, providing opportunities to spot birds and plant species from both habitats. The adjacent Tarcoles River offers plenty of crocodile-spotting opportunities, and even specialized tours.

Amenities:

The hotel has two restaurants. El Anfiteatro, a Greek-style amphitheater with spectacular Gulf views, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors on the terrace. The same landscape provides the backdrop for candlelight dinners at the elegant El Mirador Restaurant.

El Pelicano Beach Bar and Restaurant is open on the hotel’s private beach from 9 am to 4 pm, serving lunches, snacks and refreshing tropical drinks. Shaded gazebos with beach loungers are provided for guests, as well as a Jacuzzi, showers and restrooms. An hourly transfer runs back and forth from the hotel.

Back on the mountain, a lagoon-like infinity pool, complete with its own waterfall and full-service bar, creates the illusion of being one with the Pacific Ocean and for total relaxation, the Serenity Spa offers massages, body treatments and facials, all with organic Costa Rican products to rejuvenate the skin and heal the mind.

Situated on the hotel grounds, the Bella Vista Hair and Beauty Salon offers a professional service for weddings and special occasions, or everyday glamor. The salon also offers a body-spray tanning service.

And in case you need any motivation for working out, the Fitness Center benefits from what may be the best views of any gym you have ever visited.

Activities:

Traveling to the hotel’s private Caletas Beach is an adventure in itself, as four-wheel-drive vehicles descend the rocky mountainside path past iguanas, agoutis, macaws and monkeys. Energetic guests may choose to hike to the beach on the Friends of the Forest Trail.

The Villa Caletas private pebble beach offers a beautiful, wild area to relax and unwind, with wooden, curtained gazebos for ultimate privacy.

Adventure

No visit to Costa Rica is complete without a zipline tour through the jungle canopy and the excursion at Adventure Park takes visitors over 11 waterfalls, through countryside on horseback, and for a swim in a mountain stream.

A kayak and snorkeling adventure takes off from nearby Playa Agujas. After some brief instruction, the guide will paddle you out to one of the most beautiful beaches you are likely to see, where you may snorkel and enjoy a fresh fruit buffet.

Whitewater rafting excursions include a packed lunch and some time to swim in the Savegre, one of the most pristine rivers in the country.

Horseback riding to waterfalls and swimming pools, while all-inclusive sports fishing trips provide a packed lunch with a selection of refreshing drinks, straight from the cooler.

Nature

Carara National Park is particularly popular among birdwatchers, offering sightings of over 350 bird species including the Scarlet Macaw. The 12,000 acres of mostly primary forest form a transition zone between the tropical dry forest prevalent in the north of the country and the wetter climates to the south, providing opportunities to spot birds from both habitats. This is helped by the fact that the park is slightly drier than most other parks, making it easier to see through the trees. The name Carara means “crocodile river” in the indigenous Huetar language, which aptly describes the adjacent Tarcoles River.

On a tour of the Butterfly and Frog Gardens, guests can see over 50 species of iridescent butterflies, in their full life cycle, as well as ten species of venomous and non-venomous snake.

Culture

The popular tourist town of Jaco is the perfect spot to get a bite to eat, or do some souvenir shopping. Or check out the night life, where the surfers party alongside city types escaping for the weekend.
