Tortuga Island (Isla Tortuga) and the Pacific waters of Costa Rica are ripe for sport fishing, snorkeling, stand up paddle, kayaking, scuba diving, and just about any other ocean sport you can think of. And, one of the best days of my recently family reunion was a day spent out on the water just outside of Playa Herradura, Jaco, Costa Rica.
We’d been staying at Villas Caleta, enjoying the incredible views, wonderful service and amazing food; it was sublimely tranquil and relaxing, but we wanted to put a little adventure and fun into our vacation.
We decided a day out on the ocean was in order. The guys wanted to fish. Everyone wanted to go snorkeling.
With twelve people in our group (6 guys and 6 gals), it was tough to get all of us on one boat for a day of sport fishing and, truth be told, most of the gals were more down for snorkeling and sunbathing, than working hard to reel in the big one.
So, we got with our concierge and explained our needs.
Easy-peasy! A charter was quickly arranged for us through Kaimaru Sport Fishing: Two boats, one great deal, and two separate- but together- experiences. Thus, that warm sunny morning, the guys headed out to deep waters for big game sport fishing, and the ladies headed for a day off of Tortuga Island, Costa Rica.
After nearly an hour out to sea, we approached Tortuga Island, thusly named for the giant volcanic rock that sits just off its shores and looks, well, just like a turtle.
Spanning roughly 250 acres at sea level, Tortuga Island is a picturesque paradise with clear blue waters, tranquil tropical beaches, an abundance of biodiversity, and swaying palms. The great visibility of the calm, transparent waters off Isla Tortugamake for memorable underwater adventures in scuba or snorkeling gear; parrotfish, puffer fish, sea anemone, damsels, angelfish, purple and yellow tangs, starfish, and more… it is an underwater sea odyssey of beauty and fascination.
Upon arrival, we immediately spotted a sunken boat just off the rock; wow! We were so excited to get in the water and explore. Turns out it had been there for a while, but it sure was cool to dive down and look around at the all the brightly colored fish swimming in and out if its hulls.
After a couple of hours of hanging out, and snorkeling around the rock, we headed in to shore on the island. There we were greeted by the island mascot, a tame peccary (wild pig) by the name of Wilamena. We scratched her belly, got in some photo ops, and gave her slices of pineapple, and watermelon, as we lounged around on the beach, drank coco-locos, and talked girl talk.
The island has a lot offer: swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, volleyball, jet skiing, kayaking, banana boat rides, and hiking just to name a few. To put it mildly, we had a fun-filled, adventurous time.
At the end of the day, the guy’s boat joined up with ours for a little more snorkeling; of course, they proudly showed off the fish they’d caught that day, and bragged how we’d be having a great dinner that evening.

On the way back, as I saw the mainland approach, I reflected on what a beautiful day it had been under the sun, and under the sea, with my friends and family.
